2024 Charles Schwab Challenge: Top 10 power rankings at Colonial
Emiliano Grillo cemented his status as a horse for the course at Colonial after his win at the 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge.
Rounds of 67-65-72-68 got him into a playoff where he went par-birdie to defeat Adam Schenk. Grillo nearly squandered the tournament late in regulation with a wayward drive that led to double bogey.
He finished second in the field in Strokes Gained: Putting (7.439) and was eighth in SG: Approach (4.349). Grillo was also T-1st in birdies (18) and won the tournament despite two doubles on the week.
This is what the Argentinian said when asked what about Colonial fits his game so well:
“It's a lot of different clubs off the tee,” Grillo was transcribed by ASAP Sports. “Got to keep it in the fairway, got to keep it on the green. I would think that's my strong part of the game.”
Grillo’s recent form, or lack thereof, is what’s keeping him from climbing higher in the power rankings. The 31-year-old has failed to finish above T-54th in his previous five starts.
He does have two top-10s on the year, including T-8th at a Signature Event, the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Grillo has been money on short to mid-iron approaches this season. He ranks fourth on the PGA Tour in average proximity from 150-175 yards (24’8”), 14th from 75-100 (13’11”), 29th from 50-125 (17’7”) and 44th from 100-125 (18’11”).
His lack of distance has hindered him in recent weeks, so getting to a shorter venue like Colonial should get Grillo back on track.
