Kind of like how he has just one Masters green jacket, it’s tough to believe Jordan Spieth has just one plaid jacket from Colonial.

The Dallas native has long played well at this event held one city over. Most notable was in 2016 when Spieth posted 67-66-65-65 to roll to a three-shot victory.

“It's great, because we have quite a few golf courses on the PGA Tour that are some of the shortest golf courses that produce some of the highest scores. It just shows you that you don't have to keep adding length,” Spieth was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2017. “You can carve it a different way. This is not -- Phil has won here twice. Phil hits the ball a long ways. There have been bombers who have won here and there have been guys who have played for positioning and short game that have won here.”

The win was sandwiched by T-2nd (64-73-67-65) in 2015 and T-2nd (70-68-68-65) in 2017. He’s made 10 cuts in 11 starts with the streak snapping last year when dueling 72s left him three off the cut line.

In 2021, Spieth was two off the course record with an opening 63. He closed in 66-66-73 to take solo second.

The 30-year-old is hoping the good vibes from past years at Colonial help him overcome some middling recent form by his standards.

Spieth is coming off T-43rd last week at the PGA Championship. That was his fifth straight event failing to place higher than T-29th.

He’s played well in Texas earlier this year, grabbing T-10th at the Valero Texas Open.

On the season, Spieth ranks 23rd on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Total (.825), meaning he’s not too far off from being an elite player again.

The former Texas Longhorn is 14th in SG: Off-the-Tee (.522) and 34th in SG: Putting (.346).
