Matt Fitzpatrick is headed to PGA National for the first time since 2017.

The Englishman’s teed it up just twice in Palm Beach Gardens. As a youngster, he missed the cut in 2016 and took 68th in 2017.

Fitzpatrick’s clearly evolved into a much better player, so his course history from a while back doesn’t seem too relevant to his chances this week.

Fitzy’s current form is a bit below his standards, but there are still some good showings to work with. He has a pair of top-15 finishes in five starts this season.

Fitzpatrick opened 2024 well with T-14th at The Sentry. He also played well at TPC Scottsdale, taking T-15th at the WM Phoenix Open.

We last saw Fitzpatrick in action at the Genesis Invitational where he missed the cut. That was his third tournament in a row, so a break last week comes at a good time.

While the results aren’t there at the Cognizant Classic, Fitzpatrick has played well in the southeastern U.S. and on Bermuda greens like this week’s. He took second in another Florida event, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, in 2019 and won the 2023 RBC Heritage.

Fitzpatrick ranked 21st on the PGA Tour last season in Strokes Gained: Total (.921). He has the short game to survive around PGA National, coming in at 31st in SG: Around-the-Green (.238) and 11th in SG: Putting (.525).

Fitzpatrick was also 13th in scrambling (64.63%) and second in putting from inside 10 feet (91.24%).
