2024 Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches: Top 10 power rankings at PGA National
Cam Young wishes he had his final round back earlier this year at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, but it’s otherwise been a fairly successful start to 2024.
He was the 54-hole leader and ended up taking third at that DP World Tour event, finishing only two behind Rory McIlroy and one back of Adrian Meronk.
Young has since added T-8th at the WM Phoenix Open and T-16th in his last start a couple weeks ago at the Genesis Invitational.
The 26-year-old Wake Forest product comes to the Cognizant Classic for the second time. Young debuted at PGA National in 2022 where he carded 68-73-74-65 to fight his way back on Sunday to T-16th.
Some of Young’s best golf has come when the conditions are tough. He’s an elite ball striker who can hit narrow targets when he needs to and command his ball in the wind.
It’s why some of his best results have come at the majors.
“I know the greens will be firm and fast, I know the rough typically is pretty thick, so it just is demanding all day long,” Young was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2022 describing PGA National. “You have to hit it in the fairway and then you have to be very, very good to get shots on the green and I think that's kind of going to be the name of the game this week.”
The New Yorker ranks 14th on the PGA Tour this season in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (.649). It’s important to be able to control your ball on approach into the greens at PGA National. Young is top-50 in approach proximity both from the rough and fairway.
