2024 Genesis Scottish Open: Top 10 power rankings at The Renaissance Club
It’s one thing to win your first PGA Tour event. It’s another to win it by four and set the tournament record.
That’s what Davis Thompson did last week at the John Deere Classic. The former Georgia Bulldog standout ran away with it at TPC Deere Run, carding 63-67-62-64 (-28) to break the tournament 72-hole record previously set by Michael Kim (-27) in 2018.
Thompson is starting to rack up finishes. His comfort level is rising.
“Coming out on tour, I mean, of course like every young guy, my expectation was to win every week and that's just not feasible,” Thompson was transcribed by ASAP Sports. “Throughout my life it's taken me time to get adjusted to anything in life. Took me a while to get adjusted to college. Even back to junior golf when I started playing the back tees.”
On the week in the Quad Cities, the 25-year-old ranked fourth in the field in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green, was fifth in SG: Putting (7.432), and 11th in SG: Off-the-Tee (3.205). He led with 30 birdies and was top-3- in virtually every stat.
Thompson went out in 29 on Sunday to put the tournament out of reach for his competitors.
This win seemed like it was due to happen. The Alabaman had T-2nd finishes this year at the Myrtle Beach Classic and two weeks ago at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Thompson is also fresh off his best career finish at a major championship, T-9th at the U.S. Open.
He quietly ranks seventh on the PGA Tour in SG: Total (1.245), aided mostly by sitting fifth in SG: Around-the-Green (.439) and 13th in SG: Tee-to-Green (1.069).
This will be his Genesis Scottish Open debut.
