Back-to-back T-6th finishes at the John Deere Classic make Denny McCarthy an attractive pick this week.

In 2022, the former Virginia Cavalier recorded 66-65-66-71. McCarthy once again posted 16-under (68-64-66-70) last year.

“Yeah, got to make birdies. Yeah, no other way around it at this place. You can't just coast around making pars around here,” McCarthy was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2022.

In 2023, McCarthy was in second place entering the final round. On the week, he ranked sixth in Strokes Gained: Putting (6.134), eighth in driving accuracy (76.79%), and 13th in SG: Off-the-Tee (2.781).

The 31-year-old comes to the Quad Cities off of a week of rest following T-31st at the Travelers Championship, his fourth straight top-40 finish. McCarthy has been one of the best players on the PGA Tour in the last decade without a win.

He’s got two solo second-place finishes in each of the last two years. Last year he was oh-so-close at the Memorial Tournament before succumbing to Viktor Hovland. This year, he posted a 28 (!) on the back nine at the Valero Texas Open to erase Akshay Bhatia’s six-shot lead and force a playoff.

McCarthy did all that work to push the rock up the hill, only for it to roll back down and smash him in the form of a water ball that doomed his chances in the playoff.

McCarthy has been quite consistent in 2024. He’s missed just two cuts overall, made two of three cuts at the majors, and took T-6th at a Signature Event, the Wells Fargo Championship.

Through June 23, McCarthy ranks 32nd on the PGA Tour in SG: Total (.698). He continues to be one of the best putters in the world, as evidenced by checking in at second in SG: Putting (.789).

McCarthy is also 20th in SG: Around-the-Green (.295) and sixth in scrambling (67.72%).
