Collin Morikawa won the first time he played Muirfield Village but has never won the Memorial Tournament.

That’s because in 2020, Muirfield Village hosted back-to-back tournaments as part of a modified PGA Tour schedule during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Morikawa won the one-off Workday Charity Open, hosted the week prior to the Memorial. That field had some, but not all, of the stars who would tee it up in week two in Dublin, Ohio.

Morikawa carded 65-66-72-66 to chase down Justin Thomas and beat him in a playoff. Morikawa was third in both Strokes Gained: Approach (9.211) and SG: Tee-to-Green (12.807).

The next week, Morikawa settled for T-48th.

The former Cal Golden Bear got back on the horse to enter another playoff at the 2021 Memorial. Morikawa (66-72-66-71) was defeated by Patrick Cantlay who ended it in one hole.

Morikawa won in spite of his short game in 2020. This time, it helped him get up and down from the only two bunkers he found. He was more well-rounded in his 2021 runner-up finish, placing top 25 in all SG categories.

Morikawa missed the cut in 2022. Last year, he had to withdraw due to back spasms after making the cut and posting 71-63-68 in the first three rounds.

With the 27-year-old in vintage form of late, absent a victory to show for it, Morikawa seems primed to get back to his form at Muirfield Village that he had at the beginning of the decade.

He’s been a machine with four top-10s and a T-16th in his last five starts. Morikawa finished in fourth place in his last two events.

Rest is on his side this week as he eschewed last week’s RBC Canadian Open.

Morikawa is 14th on the PGA Tour in SG: Total (.943), 11th in SG: Tee-to-Green (1.057), and 16th in SG: Off-the-Tee (.494).

As long as he can avoid frequenting Muirfield Village’s gnarly rough, he’s a killer from the fairway. Morikawa ranks second in average approach proximity from the fairway (20’11”).
