Muirfield Village is a good course fit for Rory McIlroy. He just hasn’t won here.
I’m sure there’s much less scar tissue arriving here as opposed to Augusta National, another venue he hasn’t conquered. I venture McIlroy still likely feels a little chapped that he hasn’t gotten to shake Jack’s hand by the 18th green in his career.
In 12 starts on property, the Northern Irishman’s made 10 cuts with five top-10s. One of them came in his most recent start last year when he finished T-7th (72-68-70-75) at the Memorial Tournament.
“You have to drive it in the fairway, especially this week,” McIlroy was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2019. “The rough is very thick. And I've had -- shot some good scores and had some good finishes around here. It suits me well. I think three of the best five putting rounds on Tour I've had here. I like the greens here. I've felt comfortable on them.”
McIlroy nearly stormed all the way back from T-11th and seven shots back entering Sunday last week at the RBC Canadian Open. He entertained the crowds with a 6-under bogey-free 64 to climb up to T-4th and put a little pressure on eventual champion Robert MacIntyre.
He led the field in driving distance (324.4 yards), just like he’s doing on the season (317.5). McIlroy had a good putting week by his standards ranking 12th in Strokes Gained (5.824) but didn’t hit enough fairways to be able to win for the second time at Hamilton.
On the season, McIlroy is third in SG: Off-the-Tee (.908) and SG: Total (1.547).
The 35-year-old won three starts ago at the Wells Fargo Championship.
