2024 Open Championship: Top 10 power rankings at Royal Troon
Scottie Scheffler was one of the few big names to eschew last week’s Genesis Scottish Open. From the year he’s had on and off the course, he’s earned the right to take a breather. Scheffler certainly doesn’t need the FedEx Cup points.
It would have been useful to get some reps on a links course at The Renaissance Club. However, he’s had time to cross the pond at his leisure and acclimate. Scheffler was seen last week playing at Turnberry.
Scheffler also has shown he can handle this different type of challenge. In years past at the Scottish Open, he took T-12th and T-3rd.
While The Open Championship has been the American’s quote-en-quote “worst” of the four majors, he’s still gone T-8th, T-21st, and T-23rd the last three years.
“In terms of links golf, I just think it's really enjoyable,” Scheffler was quoted by ASAP Sports at the 2023 Open. “I play Renaissance each year and it's very fun, and then we get to the Open and then I start getting really used to links golf and I just want to play a lot more of it, and I get a little sad that I've got to be done with it until next July.”
Based on how frequently Scheffler’s been featured in the power rankings this year, it seems redundant to list his accomplishments once more. I’ll do it anyway, because we shouldn’t take his dominance for granted.
Highlighted by his second green jacket, the former Texas Longhorn’s won six times before July, has two more second-place finishes and five more top-10s this season.
The next thing he’s aiming to do is win a major outside the lush confines of Augusta National. All systems are go for him to do just that at Royal Troon.
