2024 Open Championship: Top 10 power rankings at Royal Troon
Just as things seemed to be falling into place for Patrick Cantlay, the injury bug pops back up.
The eight-time PGA Tour winner contended in hopes for his first major championship victory last month at the U.S. Open, where he took T-3rd. He was in it until the end for the first time in his career.
Cantlay followed that up with T-5th the next week at the Travelers Championship.
His stock was rising heading into this week at Royal Troon.
It was a surprise to see him in the John Deere Classic field, an event he’d never played and that most stars eschew. Cantlay didn’t tee it up at TPC Deere Run after all, citing a minor injury sustained while training early in the week that led to his withdrawal prior to the tournament.
He was vague on specifics, so it’s tough to know exactly where he stands given he did not play in last week’s Genesis Scottish Open.
The American has made four of five cuts at The Open Championship, including T-8th two years ago at St. Andrews. While Cantlay is known for his lack of success at majors compared to his PGA Tour resume, the bottom rarely falls out. The former UCLA Bruin has made the cut in nine straight majors with three top-10s and eight top-40s.
On the PGA Tour through July 7, Cantlay is a positive in all Strokes Gained categories.
Cantlay might be higher in the power rankings if it weren’t for the injury concerns.
