2024 Open Championship: Top 10 power rankings at Royal Troon
We’re getting down to the end of debut events for Ludvig Aberg.
He’ll have played in all four major championships this year, and for his career, once he puts his tee in the ground this week at Royal Troon.
The major season has treated the Swede well thus far. He nearly became the first rookie Masters champion in over 40 years, claiming solo second only behind Augusta National stalwart, Scottie Scheffler.
Lingering knee issues played a part in Aberg missing the cut at the PGA Championship. The former Texas Tech Red Raider got back on the horse at the U.S. Open where he led after 36 holes en route to T-12th at the U.S. Open.
Aberg has won on European soil before. He won the 2023 Omega European Masters in Switzerland.
It looked like the 24-year-old was going to win last week, too. Aberg was the 54-hole leader by two before faltering on Sunday. After posting 64-64-65, a final-round 73 dropped him to T-4th.
While disappointing, it was still his second top-five in four starts and his fourth top-10 in the last seven.
Through July 7, Aberg ranks eighth on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Total (1.236). He’s ninth in SG: Approach (1.587) and 12th in SG: Tee-to-Green (1.14). Aberg’s ability to navigate his ball off the tee to avoid hazards and then use his exquisite iron play to attack the right portions of the greens should help take the pressure off his short game that has felled him at times.
