2024 Open Championship: Top 10 power rankings at Royal Troon
Collin Morikawa’s three appearances at The Open Championship have been fascinating.
After the pandemic canceled the 2020 edition that would have been his tournament debut, Morikawa won it in 2021 at Royal St. George’s.
He was in the top 10 through all four rounds. Morikawa pulled into second place after 36 holes and stuck there, hanging a shot back of Louis Oosthuizen entering Sunday.
Morikawa shot a brilliant 4-under-par 68 to pip Jordan Spieth by two and Oosthuizen and Jon Rahm by four.
The American looked like a links golf master from day one.
Morikawa was proof positive that it’s not always easy being a defending champion. He missed the cut, albeit just by one shot, the next year at St. Andrews.
The former Cal-Berkeley standout was once again a shot shy of playing the weekend last year at Royal Liverpool.
Morikawa is having a scintillating 2024 that indicates he’ll have better fortune across the pond this time.
The 27-year-old has done everything but win an event this year. He’s only missed two cuts and none since February. Morikawa has seven top-10s, including solo second at a Signature Event, the Memorial Tournament.
At the majors, he’s gone T-3rd at the Masters, T-4th at the PGA Championship, and T-14th at the U.S. Open.
Morikawa played himself into the penultimate pairing on Sunday last week at the Genesis Scottish Open. He didn’t have his best stuff on the final day but still scraped out a 1-under 69 to post T-4th. Morikawa ranked top-20 in all Strokes Gained categories from approach play on in. He was T-2nd in birdies (23).
On the PGA Tour through July 7, the 27-year-old ranks sixth in SG: Total (1.304). While he was not great Off-the-Tee last week, he’s 13th in that stat in 2024 (.536).
