2024 Players Championship: Top 10 power rankings at TPC Sawgrass
Justin Thomas has quietly put together some great results in 2024. He’s not going to be satisfied until he wins one of these, but Thomas is closer to his old self than he was in 2023.
Last week’s T-12th finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational was his fourth top-12 in five starts this season.
He’s played well in two of the three Signature Events he appeared in. A T-6th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and his effort at Bay Hill are positive signs with the Masters lurking around the corner.
Last week featured rounds of 69-71-72-73 (-3). He was well back of Scottie Scheffler’s scorching pace (-15), but Thomas was four shots away from a top-five. He was as high as third place before losing some steam on the back nine when trying to make something happen.
Confidence from recent weeks pair well with good course history at TPC Sawgrass.
Thomas won at the Stadium Course in 2021. Scores of 71-71-64-68 (-14) netted him a one-shot win.
He’s made all eight cuts at the Players Championship since debuting in 2015.
JT also took T-3rd (70-68-75-65) in 2016.
“...this place rewards good golf and penalizes bad golf,” Thomas was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2020. “…it depends on the weather and you can get some cold, windy and some firm weeks in March, but some of my high numbers have been in May mostly. When it gets firm like that, it puts even more of a premium on hitting the fairway, and those days where I had some high numbers, I was not playing well, and I didn't really have any control of my ball versus when I was playing well. If you get the ball in the fairway you have a lot of wedges and 9-irons into these greens, and I feel like that's a strength of my game.”
Thomas ranks eighth on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (1.22). He’s a good recovery player, which can help keep rounds together at TPC Sawgrass.
Thomas is eighth in average approach proximity from the rough (38’7”).
