2024 Players Championship: Top 10 power rankings at TPC Sawgrass
It would be a reach to go with anyone other than Scottie Scheffler for the No. 1 spot.
He’s the defending champion at TPC Sawgrass where he won by a whopping five shots. Scheffler finally got the putter going last week to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational by five once again.
He’s No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking, the FedEx Cup, the Data Golf ranking, Sagarin ranking, and any other ranking you want to include.
Last week, Scheffler carded rounds of 70-67-70-66 (-15) to beat Wyndham Clark in second place by five and Shane Lowry in third by six. No one else broke 280.
Scheffler hadn’t won an official PGA Tour event since his triumph at the 2023 Players. He played extraordinary golf in the interim, but just couldn’t roll in enough putts to close out tournaments.
Bayhill’s Bermuda greens have treated Scheffler kindly over the years. He would’ve won with an average putting week. Instead, he got hot and gained 4.347 strokes on the week to rank fifth in the field.
Add that proficiency with the putter with a top ranking in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (5.046) and in SG: Around-the-Green (3.766), and it’s lights out for everyone.
The win at Bay Hill could be a big springboard back to his ways of picking off wins at a significant clip.
“I did win in the Bahamas, but as far as a PGA TOUR event, it had been almost a year, and so there had been a lot of chatter about my game and the state of where it was at,” Scheffler was transcribed by ASAP Sports, “and so it was nice to kind of come in here with a good mental attitude and to perform well under pressure and I think today's round was really special for me going forward.”
The Bay Hill win was his fourth straight top-10 and fifth of 2024.
Scheffler’s 17-under-par finish at the 2023 Players was the tournament’s second-lowest score in the last 20 years.
He did it while ranking 48th in SG: Putting (.107). The counterbalance was top-five ranks in every SG ball striking stat.
