2024 RBC Heritage: Top 10 power rankings at Harbour Town
Could this finally be the year Patrick Cantlay dons that tartan jacket?
He’s been knocking on the door at the RBC Heritage so long his knuckles are bloody.
Cantlay has five top-seven finishes in six starts at Harbour Town. In 2022, he finished solo second (66-67-70-68) and lost in a playoff to another horse for the course, Jordan Spieth.
Last year, the former UCLA Bruin went three shots lower (69-65-66-68) but only mustered solo third. Cantlay finished one shot out of a playoff between champion Matt Fitzpatrick and Spieth.
On the week, Cantlay gained strokes in every category save for Around-the-Green. He was sixth in SG: Off-the-Tee (3.757), seventh in SG: Putting (4.999), and 12th in SG: Approach (4.807).
“It's a golf course I feel really comfortable on so I look forward to this event every year,” Cantlay was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2019. “And I feel like it suits my game.”
Cantlay is coming off a T-22nd finish last week at the Masters. That’s his fourth top-25 in eight starts this season. Not a bad clip, but a player of his caliber is still looking for more. This week is a great opportunity to get some momentum going into next month’s PGA Championship.
The 32-year-old is having a solid, if not spectacular, 2024. Highlights include T-4th at the Genesis Invitational and T-11th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Strong iron play is key at Harbour Town, particularly in the short to mid distances. Cantlay is second on the PGA Tour in average approach proximity from 125-150 yards (19’).
His PGA Tour Strokes Gained profile is not that eye-popping, but he would have benefitted if last week’s Masters counted toward the cause.
