2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Top 10 power rankings at Detroit Golf Club
The Rocket Mortgage Classic is more than a half decade old.
It’s far from one of the premiere events on the PGA Tour, but it’s produced some interesting winners from Bryson DeChambeau to Rickie Fowler since its inaugural edition in 2019.
The Rocket is also played on a classic Donald Ross golf course, Detroit Golf Club. That’s the same architect who designed Pinehurst No. 2, site of the recent U.S. Open. This Ross track won’t offer anywhere close to the same level of difficulty.
Winning scores at this event range from 18-under-par to 25-under with the cut line falling several strokes under on an annual basis.
DGC opened in 1906 as a six-hole course. Ross entered the picture in 1913 and helped increase the club to 36 holes.
This venue has hosted big events like the 1911 Western Amateur, the 1941 Ryder Cup, and the 1992 U.S. Mid-Amateur. DGC now stretches out to 7,334 yards for a par 72.
The field this week boasts 156 players trying to make the 36-hole cut of top 65 and ties.
The greens are bentgrass/poa annua and have some undulation. Fairways and rough are bentgrass/poa mixed with bluegrass. Fairways tend to run fast this time of year but are wide and easy to hit. As long as you’re in them, it’s easy to score low.
Bombers usually have an advantage this week.
The weather forecast shows that it won’t be too hot with highs in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit with winds getting into the teens miles per hour on some days. It could rain midweek and perhaps on the weekend, though it doesn’t look like it’ll derail the tournament too much.
Let’s get on with this week’s power rankings in the Motor City:
