2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Top 10 power rankings at Detroit Golf Club
Chris Kirk is a top-25 machine at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
He’s teed it up every year since 2020 at Detroit Golf Club. Results in chronological order show T-21st (67-65-70-73), T-12th (67-68-70-69), T-17th (68-69-67-70), and T-14th (67-68-67-69).
Last year, Kirk was sixth in the field in Strokes Gained: Approach (5.933), 12th in SG: Around-the-Green (2.759), T-10th in driving accuracy (78.57%), T-6th in greens in regulation (83.33%), and sixth in scrambling (83.33%).
The Tennesseean and former Georgia Bulldog seems to fit right in in the Great Lakes region.
“This is just an awesome golf course,” Kirk was transcribed by Tee Scripts in 2020. “I wasn't here last year, but yeah, from the first time going out there, it's just such a beautiful, classic golf course, really fun greens.”
Kirk is coming off T-63rd last week at the Travelers Championship. He played well the week prior, posting T-26th at the U.S. Open to get going in the right direction after three straight missed cuts.
Kirk has eight top-30s in 2024, including his sixth career PGA Tour victory to open the year at The Sentry. He also took T-10th at another Signature Event, the RBC Heritage.
He ranks 33rd on the PGA Tour in SG: Tee-to-Green (.579) and 40th in SG: Off-the-Tee (.291). Kirk is also fifth in average approach proximity from 125-150 yards (20’8”) and 20th in birdie average (4.13 per round).
If he can get the putter going, Kirk could win his second event of the season and already have his ticket punched to East Lake.
