2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Top 10 power rankings at Detroit Golf Club
Will Zalatoris has earned a paycheck on each of his two trips to the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
His 2021 debut at Detroit Golf Club was nothing to write home about with a solo 77th-place finish (70-68-74-76). The Texan improved to T-20th (70-71-69-65) a year later.
Injuries kept the Wake Forest product from having the chance to make it 3-for-3 making the cut in 2023, but he’s back in the Midwest this year needing some FedEx Cup points.
In ‘22, Zalatoris ranked fifth in the field in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (4.197) and 13th in SG: Approach (3.961).
“I love the golf course,” Zalatoris was transcribed by Tee Scripts in 2022. “Like I said, what [former superintendent Jason Drumheller] and his team have done with this event has been amazing.”
Hopefully, Zalatoris still likes the golf course with new superintendent as of 2023, Sam Moynihan, at the helm.
The Texan is coming off T-42nd last week at the Travelers Championship. He got off to a hot start with an opening 64 and had three rounds in the 60s, but shooting 72 like he did on Friday doomed his prospects of a large payday.
Zalatoris owns three top-10s this year, all of which were at majors or Signature Events. The high water mark was T-2nd at the Genesis Invitational. If not for a Sunday 62 at Riviera, Zalatoris could’ve had his second career PGA Tour victory.
Willy Z ranks 28th on the PGA Tour in driving accuracy (67.81%).
