2024 Travelers Championship: Top 10 power rankings at TPC River Highlands
Sahith Theegala had to wait until last fall to win his maiden PGA Tour event at the Fortinet Championship.
He nearly got it done over a year earlier at the 2022 Travelers Championship.
The rookie seemed to be in good shape to at least make a playoff, if not win outright, until he found a fairway bunker on the 72nd hole. To make matters worse, it was right up against the lip. Instead of taking his medicine, he barely moved the ball and went on to make double bogey.
Theegala posted impressive rounds of 67-65-64-67 but he missed out on forcing a playoff by two.
The former Pepperdine Wave recorded three more rounds of par or better last year for T-52nd.
Despite his tough fortune, TPC River Highlands is a good setup for Theegala.
“Just the way this course is,” Theegala was transcribed by ASAP Sports, “it allows me to really hit these low balls which I really like out here to kind of keep it in the fairway.”
Theegala has played well in 2024, highlighted by a solo second at a Signature Event, the RBC Heritage. The 26-year-old has made the cut in all three majors, including T-12th at the Masters.
Last week resulted in T-32nd at the U.S. Open. That was an incredible result after posting 7-over 77 in round one. Playing the last 54 holes in even par was impressive given the tough conditions where nearly everyone went backward on the weekend.
Theegala ranks seventh on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Total (1.219). Aside from Around-the-Green, he’s in the top 25 in all SG categories. He’s 19th in birdie or better percentage (23.54%).
