Patrick Cantlay had six top-25s at the Travelers Championship yet never had a top-10.

That is, until last year.

At the tournament where he burst onto the scene with a first-round 60 in 2011 as a newfound pro, Cantlay posted a tournament-best T-4th (65-68-61-67) in 2023.

Keegan Bradley won in blowout fashion to stifle Cantlay’s chances at victory, but he was at least able to relive some of the magic by taking it low with a 9-under showing on Saturday.

“This is a golf course that suits my eye,” Cantlay was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2023. “I've played well around here. Every time I come to this golf course in particular I enjoy it.”

Cantlay had his best chance at winning a major championship last week at the U.S. Open. He would have loved to follow up his friend Xander Schauffele in the major winner’s circle. Cantlay had a shot to do so late into the final round.

Cantlay just couldn’t summon the necessary birdies on the back nine, settling for T-3rd two shots off the pace.

He was the first round co-leader with a dazzling 5-under 65 at Pinehurst No. 2. On a tough layout, he finished in 71-70-70. Pretty admirable, but just not quite enough.

The former UCLA Bruin was sixth in the field in Strokes Gained: Approach (1.41) and 10th in SG: Putting (1.24).

This season on the PGA Tour, Cantlay is 12th in average approach proximity from 100-125 yards (16’11”).
