2024 US Open: Top 10 power rankings at Pinehurst
Sahith Theegala checked off a box on his career to-do list last year by winning a PGA Tour event.
Will this be the year he checks off the next box of becoming a major champion?
The former Pepperdine Wave has proven he can play some good golf in the big four events. Theegala owns six made cuts in his last seven major starts. In 2024, he posted T-45th in just his second Masters (he was solo ninth in his 2023 debut) and was in contention into the fourth round at the PGA Championship en route to T-12th.
Theegala acquitted himself well last week at a challenging course befitting of a U.S. Open, Muirfield Village. A Saturday 69 helped him finish T-12th. That was the 26-year-old’s seventh top-12 of the season.
He ranked second in the field in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (3.678), 12th in SG: Approach (3.687) and 16th in SG: Around-the-Green (1.566). Had his putter been working, he could have truly given Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa a run for their money.
Theegala has been knocking on the door in several events in 2024, including solo second at The Sentry and again at the RBC Heritage. Both were Signature Events featuring all the same names (minus a handful of LIV guys) who will be teeing it up this week at Pinehurst No. 2.
This will be Theegala’s Pinehurst No. 2 debut.
He has the creativity and shot-making to thrive at this venue despite a lack of course knowledge. On the season through June 2, Theegala ranks fifth on the PGA Tour in SG: Total (1.234). He’s 23rd or higher in all SG categories except for Around-the-Green, one category he looked solid in last week.
