2024 Valero Texas Open: Top 10 power rankings at TPC San Antonio
Corey Conners wishes he could play the Valero Texas Open every week.
TPC San Antonio’s Oaks Course is the site of both of his PGA Tour victories.
Conners went from Monday qualifier to tournament champion when he won a stunner in 2019. Rounds of 69-67-66-66 led to a two-shot victory. The former Kent State Golden Flash flashed on the back nine on Sunday with a 6-under 30. His 20-under total for the week stands as the tournament record.
The Canadian has made all five cuts at this event and has never fared worse than T-35th. He doubled up for a win last year thanks to scores of 64-72-69-68 (-15). That was good for a one-shot victory over Sam Stevens.
Suffice it to say, but Conners is comfortable here.
“I feel like my shot shape, I can just see like turning the ball from right to left,” Conners was transcribed in 2023 by ASAP Sports. “There are so many holes out here that maybe it might not be the ideal shape, I just see my shot shape fitting into these holes. There's a number of holes that are right to left that I really like and took advantage of throughout the week, No. 6 and 15 particularly. Was able to hit aggressive tee shots on both of those holes just trusting my shot shape.”
Conners will be a favorite here for years to come regardless of form leading in.
It’s icing on the cake that he’s also coming off of two consecutive top-20s and four top-25s in his last five starts.
The 32-year-old most recently teed it up at the Players Championship where he took T-13th. The week prior, Conners played well at another Signature Event with T-18th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Conners ranks seventh on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Approach (.763) and 11th in SG: Tee-to-Green (1.093).
He’s a greens in regulation machine who will be able to handle the breezy conditions to stay in position while others fall by the wayside.
