2024 Valero Texas Open: Top 10 power rankings at TPC San Antonio
Matt Fitzpatrick can get halfway to the career Grand Slam with a win next week at the Masters.
He doesn’t always play the week before a major championship, but he’s decided to give it a go this week at the Valero Texas Open.
It’s been a relatively quiet 2024 thus far by Fitzpatrick’s high standards. He at least is trending upward after making some noise in his last start a couple weeks ago at the Players Championship.
Four rounds in the 60s at TPC Sawgrass netted him solo fifth, his best finish of the season.
Per an article by the PGA Tour’s Sean Martin, Fitzpatrick credited the removal of a four-gram weight from his driver earlier this year that helped him improve off the tee. That has long been an area of expertise until some sloppiness occurred to close 2023 and begin 2024.
Fitzpatrick did not look like the same guy after winning the 2023 RBC Heritage.
“My driving kind of got worse from pretty much after Harbour Town, and we were going back and forth," Fitzpatrick told the PGA Tour. "We were just very confused swing-wise, did all sorts (of testing). Turns out, take the weight out of the top of the driver, and I think since Phoenix is when I've taken it out, I've driven it a lot better.”
This will be the 29-year-old’s first appearance at TPC San Antonio.
He’s gaining strokes in every category this season on the PGA Tour except for Around-the-Green. Fitzpatrick is 12th in birdie average (4.76).
