2024 Valero Texas Open: Top 10 power rankings at TPC San Antonio
Ludvig Aberg had an illustrious collegiate career at Texas Tech. In his time as a Red Raider, he received a sponsor’s exemption into the 2022 Valero Texas Open.
While the Swede missed the cut by a mile after rounds of 78-73, it clearly didn’t deter him from future success as a pro. That was just his third career PGA Tour start and first of 2022.
Fast forward to 2024 and Aberg has ascended into the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking in less than a year since turning pro last summer. It’s unbelievable he hasn’t even played in a major championship yet.
That startling fact will be put to rest next week at Augusta National where he represents a great chance at becoming the first Masters rookie to don the green jacket since 1979.
Aberg comes to TPC San Antonio off of two weeks of rest. They were well-earned after he finished nicely in back-to-back Signature Events in Florida. The 24-year-old took T-25th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and solo eighth at the Players Championship.
Aberg’s statistical profile is veteran-like. He’s gaining strokes in every category, which of course is led by his driving prowess. Aberg ranks 21st in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (.804). It wouldn’t be a surprise if he’s in the top 10 come season’s end.
He has the iron play to hold up well in windy conditions that are a norm at the Texas Open. Aberg ranks second in average approach proximity from 150-175 yards (22’11”).
