2024 Wells Fargo Championship: Top 10 power rankings at Quail Hollow
Contesting a Signature Event the week before a major championship can be a contentious debate among pros.
Some players relish the chance to get their competitive juices flowing and make sure their game is in shape heading to the next week. In this case, the PGA Championship looms.
Others prefer the rest, and perhaps the opportunity to arrive on site at a major early.
Players are afforded to skip one Signature Event without penalty.
Most big names are giving it a go this week at the Wells Fargo Championship.
The exception is a notable one. Galleries this week at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, will be disappointed to see world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is not in the field.
It’s not out of disdain for the tournament. Rather, it’s because Scheffler remains on baby watch for the birth of his first child.
The Wells Fargo Championship has been held annually most years at Quail Hollow since 2003.
The tournament moved venues in 2017 due to the PGA Championship, the pandemic canceled the event in 2020, and the tournament moved again in 2022 due to the Presidents Cup.
Quail Hollow is a George W. Cobb design that opened in 1959. His course has ballooned to 7,600 yards in the modern day to hold up to advances in club technology.
There is some tree line to contend with, though Quail Hollow is not overly dense and trees were removed during the latest redesign.
Champion Bermudagrass is the surface from tee to green. Green complexes are about average size by PGA Tour standards with greens usually rolling faster than average.
There is a SubAir system in place.
That system could be used on Thursday and Friday when rain is a possibility. It otherwise looks like a pleasant weather week with temperatures cooling into the 50s-70s Fahrenheit for tournament play.
It looks like it could be windy early in the tournament before subsiding some on the weekend.
