Wyndham Clark is back to defend his Wells Fargo Championship title.

Clark was an incredible amateur coming up the ranks. As a pro, he was an analytics darling coming into Quail Hollow last year with a lot of nice finishes, but no wins to show for it.

That changed when he not only won here in North Carolina, but he dominated. Scores of 67-67-63-68 blitzed the field for a four-shot win over second place and a seven-shot win over third.

Clark led the field in Strokes Gained: Approach (8.202), was third in SG: Putting (7.461), and was 11th in SG: Off-the-Tee (2.766). There were no weak spots in his game, as evidenced by tying for first in birdies (22) and tying for fewest bogeys (five).

“...it's such a tough golf course, there's stretches, there's like a few holes where it's really tough and then you are given some birdie holes,” Clark was transcribed by Tee Scripts in 2023. “Every hole, if you don't hit it in position off the tee, it's hard regardless of distance or par 5 or whatnot.”

As we’ve come to learn, tough major championship golf courses are right up his alley.

The former Oregon Duck and Oklahoma State Cowboy won the U.S. Open three starts later at Los Angeles Country Club.

Fast forward to this year, and he’s a champ at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Clark has ascended to his apex in the Official World Golf Ranking thanks also to runner-up finishes in back-to-back weeks at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship.

Clark is a bomber who is built for big ballparks like what we’ll see this week in Charlotte.

However, he’s shown he can be versatile. Clark recorded T-3rd in his last start a couple weeks ago at the RBC Heritage. Harbour Town is one of the shortest, narrowest courses on the schedule.

The 30-year-old ranks second on the PGA Tour in SG: Total (1.78), only behind the torrid pace of Scottie Scheffler.

Clark is top-60 in all SG categories, including 11th Off-the-Tee (1.101).
