Davis Thompson just finished winning his first PGA Tour event of his career at the John Deere Classic, and what a performance he put on.

Not only was his finishing score of 28-under good enough to win by four shots, but it also netted him $1.44 million and the lowest John Deere Classic score of all time.

As you can imagine, Thompson was extremely emotional after winning on Sunday. And thankfully the cameras caught this beautiful moment between him and his wife directly after he made his final putt.

Davis Thompson executes gameplan to perfection

The emotions poured over into Thompson’s post-tournament media session, but he first discussed what his strategy was going into the final round.

“I just wanted to stay aggressive. I knew there would be low scores out there today because the wind kind of died down and the conditions were a little soft. So I knew I was going to have to go play well,” Thompson said after the win.

That aggressive mindset worked to perfection as he was able to card a 6-under 29 on the front nine. When speaking about that mindset further, Thompson then said, “I'm just thankful it worked out. I got off to a great start today and was able to just kind of cruise on the back nine.”

And cruise he did, because all he needed was a 1-under 35 on the back nine to still win the tournament by four.

Davis Thompson gets emotional after John Deere Classic victory

Once his round was complete, Thompson spoke with a tour reporter and really dove into the emotions he was feeling. When asked where all the emotions were coming from, Thompson shared, “Seeing my wife, it just means a lot…I’m just so thankful she was able to make it.”

Thompson continued, “I just tried to stay present all day and when that putt finally went in it was just a big sigh of relief.”

Finally, Thompson was asked how gratifying it was to see his hard work finally pay off with a victory. Thompson said, “I’ve been working hard this year. It was ok for awhile and then I kind of got goin this last month and played well last week and just tried to keep it rolling this week.“

So while Thompson may not be the flashiest winner on the PGA Tour, there’s no denying that he’s deserving. He played excellent golf all week long and was able to take down so many other guys who were posting low scores. And oh yeah, he set the John Deere scoring record as well.

If that doesn’t convince you that he’s deserving and make you like him, then nothing will.
