Nelly Korda, Schauffele on course to defend Olympic gold this summer for Team USA
With the Olympics less than three months away, attention will be turning toward who will represent the United States on the world stage. Both gold medalists from three years ago, seem to be on track to defend their respective gold medals this summer.
Nelly Korda and Xander Schauffele both won tournaments this past weekend.
After their wins, it is looking increasingly likely that both will be competing in Paris. Both players took different paths to their victory over the weekend. It was Korda's sixth victory in the last seven tournaments as she was victorious at the Mizuho Americas Open. She is clearly the LPGA's number-one ranked player in the world and is inching closer to another shot at Olympic glory.
“Any time I get to represent the Red, White and Blue, it’s a huge honor,” Korda told LPGA.com last month. “That would be another thing I would be extremely grateful for.”
As for Schauffele, this past weekend at the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, he captured his first win on tour this season and his first major title in his career. He shot a 65 en route to a one-shot victory over Bryson DeChambeau. It was his eighth win on tour and first since the Genesis Scottish Open in 2022.
Schauffele currently ranks No.2 in both world and Olympic Golf Rankings (OGR). He now seems to be in a prime spot to secure the chance to compete for another gold. After winning the PGA, he spoke about his chances saying: “It’s a whole different ballgame winning that one (the Olympics), but I definitely will be able to pull some confidence from this one (PGA Championship).”
The top 60 ranked players, both male and female, will be given a slot to compete in Paris this August.
Nelly Korda and Xander Schauffele will once again be the favorites to not only medal but bring home the Gold for the United States.
