Ranking Tiger Woods' Masters victories #1: 2019 Masters

No, the 2019 Masters did not see Tiger Woods lap the field. He did not have a memorable chip in that will be replayed forever. But the reason the 2019 Masters is his greatest victory is because of everything he had gone through the previous decade.

He had gone through scandal, countless injuries, innumerable comebacks, and several close calls in the majors. All of it culminating in this massive release of emotion after it had been so long since Tiger had put on the green jacket.

Tiger did not win this tournament by overpowering the course like he did in the past. Instead, he won it with his brain. Nowhere was this more evident than the 12th hole on Sunday when several players had hit it into the water, clearly misjudging the famously swirling winds. Tiger went nowhere near the flag, going towards the middle of the green and making par while Francesco Molinari double-bogeyed.

He went on to play solid golf the rest of the way, making birdie at 13, 15, and 16, with the moment of the tournament when it seemed for a few moments like he might have made a hole-in-one. While that is the most memorable moment from the tournament, for me his drive on 17 was even more impressive. It would have been easy to be too amped-up and make a wild swing but instead, he piped it down the middle which led to an easy par and allowed him to play the 18th conservatively.

It is crazy that it has been nearly five years since this victory. So much has happened to Tiger since then. The 2019 Masters will probably be his final major victory barring something unbelievable. But even if he never wins again, it was an unforgettable victory that bookends his career perfectly with the image of him hugging his dad after the 1997 Masters and him hugging his son Charlie after his victory in 2019.

All of Tiger's Masters victories are special and everyone probably has their own rankings. But one thing is for sure, Tiger's victories at Augusta have defined his storied career. We will see if he can somehow add a 6th green jacket to his collection next week.
