Can Rory McIlroy return to past glory at 2024 Open Championship?
10 years ago, Rory McIlroy won his first Open Championship and third major. The 2014 Open Championship played at Royal Liverpool was a huge moment for the young golfer.
Since then, McIlroy has only won one other major (PGA Championship in 2014) and will be looking to bounce back after a heartbreaking loss at the US Open this weekend at the 2024 Open Championship.
In 2014, he won the Claret Jug after shooting a 271, 17-under par score. He won by two strokes over Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia. Many thought he would continue to capture major titles and was considered an heir apparent to Tiger Woods.
Since winning two majors in 2014, Rory McIlroy has yet to return to the winner's circle in a major championship. This despite 23 top-10 finishes since his last major win. He also has four finishes where he finished in second place.
At the Open Championship, Rory McIlroy has five top 10s since his 2014 victory.
On top of looking to break his major drought, he will be looking to bounce back after the heartbreaking ending to the US Open back in June. McIlroy had a two-stroke lead with four holes to go over Bryson DeChambeau. He would bogey three of the final four holes including on the 18th green to lose by one stroke.
McIlroy spoke about his frustration after the US Open loss. "Went from being very disappointed and dejected to trying to focus on the positives to then wanting to learn from the negatives and then getting to the point where you become enthusiastic and motivated to go again," McIlroy told reporters on Tuesday.
Despite the major drought, McIlroy continues to be one of the strongest players on tour. His last win came in May when he won a record fourth Wells Fargo Championship. He will look to capture his first major in 10 years and fifth of his career this weekend at the Open. He is set to tee off at Royal Troon Golf Club at 5:09 am (EST) this Thursday.
