Saturday Presidents Cup picks: International Team continue comeback for the ages?
To say things looked bleak for the International Team heading into day two of this year's Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal would have been a vast understatement. The home side may not have been dismantled in their matches against the Americans on day one, but they were on the scoreboard and faced a shocking 5-0 deficit as a result. Even as underdogs coming into this year's competition, a winless opening session for the hosts was stunning. Captain Mike Weir and company needed a miracle.
It was the kind of result that had golf fans questioning the integrity of the competition, especially with the absence of key players who play their golf on the LIV Tour, and players like International Team star Tom Kim calling out the home fans after a miserable first day. Then, just as quickly as everything had gone so horribly wrong on day one for the home team, it all improbably flipped back on day two just as fast. The result was the greatest turnaround in Presidents Cup history as Weir and company erased a 5-0 deficit and inflicted their own 5-0 beatdown upon their American adversaries.
The International Team won their first Foursomes session since 2005 and the Americans plummeted to a 1-12 record in their last three Foursomes sessions dating back to last year's dismal Ryder Cup in Rome; per Justin Ray. What once seemed like a contest all but over after only one day is now anything but, the question now, what on earth will happen next?
The next two sessions, both on Saturday, will likely play a large role in determining the outcome of this year's Presidents Cup now after the International Team's emphatic comeback on Friday. Can the U.S. get off the mat after being dealt a massive blow on day 2? Or will the International Team ride this newfound momentum all the way to a second Presidents Cup title? Saturday at Royal Montreal is bound to produce plenty of fireworks with the Cup now hanging in the balance. Let's take a stab at predicting the unpredictable in the early Four-ball session on day three.
Saturday Four-ball predictions at the Presidents Cup
Match 11 (7:02 a.m. ET): Scottie Scheffler/Collin Morikawa vs. Adam Scott/Taylor Pendrith
It's the first match of the early session on day three and it already feels critically important for Jim Furyk's U.S. Team. Both Scheffler and Morikawa secured victories in Thursday's Four-ball session, albeit with different partners, and have to put up a point for the U.S. in this opening match. Defeat in the opener with two of the top 4-ranked players in the world would be an utter disaster for U.S. Captain Jim Furyk and company.
Match 12 (7:20 a.m. ET): Tony Finau/Xander Schauffele vs. Corey Conners/Mackenzie Hughes
American pair Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele reunite for another crucial Four-ball match on day three after the pair were victorious in the opening session of this year's Presidents Cup. Meanwhile, Mike Weir will send out the lethal combination of Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes for a second consecutive session after the Canadian pairing crushed Wyndham Clark and Finau in Friday's Foursomes session. Home support propels team Conners/Hughes to another thrilling win in a tightly contested match.
Match 13 (7:38 a.m. ET): Keegan Bradley/Wyndham Clark vs. Si Woo Kim/Tom Kim
Si Woo Kim joined in on the fun on Friday after a somewhat surprising omission from the side on day one. Si Woo and playing partner Byeong Hun An produced a stunner in the second session of this year's Presidents Cup beating World No.1 Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley. After sitting out on day two, Tom Kim returns alongside Si Woo for Saturday's early Four-ball match against Bradley and Clark. Team Kim has way too much for the U.S. side and wins this match by some margin giving the International Team the lead for the first time in this year's competition.
Match 14 (7:56 a.m. ET): Patrick Cantlay/Sam Burns vs. Hideki Matsuyama/Sungjae Im
For a third consecutive session, Patrick Cantlay and Hideki Matsuyama will square off. Cantlay reunites with Sam Burns for a second time in Four-ball, while Sungjae Im sticks with Matsuyama after the International pairing crushed team Xander/Cantlay on Friday 7&6. Cantlay and Burns defeated Hideki and playing partner Corey Conners on day one, but Deki and Im are "vibing" according to Sungjae. That's all I need to hear. They keep the momentum going and hand the U.S. another crushing defeat to take a two-point advantage into the afternoon session. Who would have seen that coming after Thursday?!
