Three top Constellation Furyk & Friends, One just turned 50

Bob Estes, Joe Durant, and Freddie Jacobson are tied at 6-under par at the top of the Constellation Furyk & Friends tournament. While Estes and Durant are veterans of PGA Tour Champions, Jacobson is new to it, so new his 50th birthday was last week.

His first round on PGA Tour Champions was a 66, which is good, but not good enough to be at the top of the Constellation Furyk & Friends field by himself because this tour is a sprint. Still, it’s an achievement for someone who hasn’t played a lot of competitive golf lately.

“You know what?  It kind of feels like returning home again,” he said after his round. “It's been such a great few days meeting everybody again. It's been years since I've seen all the guys.”

He's been away so long he doesn't have a clothing deal or a club deal. He wore a Timuquana Country Club hat, the site of the Constellation Furyk & Friends tournament.

“I know I got very limited opportunity,” Jacobson said about starting this late in the year. “I got very fortunate through Adam, Jim, and Tabitha this week to get an invitation to get to play.”

The two veterans he’s tied with, Durant and Estes have a lot of experience at the speed of PGA Tour Champions events.

Estes credited his score to his wedge shots which set up birdies.

“All four par-5s, I hit really good wedge shots or pitch shots and got it up there pretty close,” he said.

He also birdied all the par fives at the Constellation Furyk & Friends

Which are a key to making low scores.

He said it is hard to shoot even par on the Champions circuit and have a chance to win.

“You need to typically shoot at least 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-under to have a chance,” he said.

Most of Joe Durant’s birdies came in the middle of his front nine, which was the back nine of the golf course. He birdied the 12th through the 16th.

"Just had a really nice stretch of holes where I hit some really nice iron shots,” he explained. “Two of the par-5s, basically had tap-ins. Then I kind of hit a lull after that for about five holes.”

Like many PGA Tour Champions players, he’s trying for as high a finish in the Schwab Cup as possible.

“We're all kind of jockeying for position,” he said. “Obviously, the guys that are way ahead are kind of out of my range, but I would like to finish the year strong.”

Durant had a victory earlier this year at the Cologuard Classic.

“I'd like to try to maybe pick another one off before the year is out,” he explained.

Regardless, he’s a fan of this week.

“These are great tournaments. I love this time of year. This is my favorite time of year to play golf. And in Florida, too, so feel right at home,” he said.

So, while Estes and Durant are trying to bolster their seasons with a victory, Jacobson is trying to get a place to play again.

Regardless, he’s enjoying the week.

“It's been a ton of fun, so, yeah, great catching up,” he said about being back playing competitive golf with people he knows.“The last couple of years I played on the main Tour everything got very young.”
