John Daly: The PGA Tour Drug Testing Policy Is a “Big Joke”

John Daly has a bone to pick with Tim Finchem and the drug testing procedures on the PGA Tour.  The rumor last week was that Tiger Woods isn’t taking a break from golf, but he’s actually been suspended by the tour for PED use.  If that is the case Tiger is taking the wrong ones I’ll tell you that much.  The tour has shot down that claim, but that didn’t prevent Daly from sounding off this week about it.  During a segment on his show “Hit It Hard with John Daly” on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio he didn’t mince his words and called the whole process a “big joke.”

"“I’m just pissed at it because I’m gonna get pissed tested everywhere I go, I’m so sick and tired of it being random, it’s not random.  If you are Tim Finchem get off your ass and get it right.  I’m tired of it because it has to be random.”"

Daly claims that he knows exactly when the drug tests are coming and that calling it random is completely false.  The tour has never been that open about its drug testing policy other than the fact that PEDs are banned and some type of random testing takes place.  The way Daly is talking it doesn’t seem like it’s that difficult for someone to bend the rules.  With the sophistication of the dopers these days if you give them a heads up when the test is coming that’s almost half the battle.

"“I know when I’m getting drug tested,” he said. “That’s sad. They all know when we’re getting drug tested. And for you dopers and all that s— on the PGA Tour, you know you’re getting drug tested, you got it made! You got it made!”"

Some people may find it difficult to believe everything Daly says because let’s face it, he’s the definition of golf’s wild child.  He may have wasted some god given talent with his out of control off the course lifestyle but he usually tells it like it is and that is part of the reason why he is beloved.   So if he says there is a questionable process in place for the random drug testing, a big part of me believes him.

This isn’t the first time a well-known player has criticized the tour for its lackadaisical drug testing policy.  In 2008 just a few weeks removed from his duel with Tiger Woods at Torrey Pines, Rocco Mediate told ESPN.com that the process is “the biggest joke in the history of the world.”  The tour responded by revamping its drug testing policy, but we still don’t know exactly what that means.  They traditionally keep their suspensions or fines of players private so if someone was suspended for PED use we’d have no idea.

The rumors about Tiger are nothing compared to the ones surrounding Dustin Johnson, who is still fielding questions about why he really decided to take a leave of absence last season.  The thought is that D.J. may have been caught by the tour and his break was just an excuse.   The tour won’t say much about Johnson and say they will look into Daly’s claims.  Don’t expect to find out much from them because when it comes to this topic, they just don’t tell us much.
