Donald Trump Is Bad For Golf

It’s time for the PGA Tour’s annual visit to Trump National Doral and the greatest week in golf.  Well maybe just according to its owner Donald Trump.  The world’s best are in South Beach for the first WGC event of the year, but that doesn’t matter cause it’s all about “The Donald.”   The guy is notorious for taking something that is decaying and reviving it, or just tearing it apart and rebuilding it to something bigger and better.  The only question I have, is he good for golf?

He has plenty of golf courses throughout the world, and they are all tremendous in their own way.  As much as I may want to knock his work, it would be a useless argument.  This week is an example of that.  Look at Doral four years ago before he got his hands on it, the differences are night and day.  It’s now one of the gem courses on tour.  He made the “Blue Monster” a beauty on the outside and sharpened her teeth.  It’s looks great on television and is a true test for the players, but 90% of us will never hit a shot on it.

Trump and the rest of us live in completely different worlds.  The guy sees more money in a week than most of us will see in our lifetime.  He’s a ruthless business man who has no problem crushing the little guy to grow the “Trump Brand.”  News flash to him, golf isn’t real estate.  It’s a game for all of us to play, unless of course you’re Trump who in a recent issue of Golf Digest says it’s for the privileged.

"“I would make golf aspirational, instead of trying to bring everybody into golf, people that are never going to be able to be there anyway.  You know, they’re working so hard to make golf, as they say, a game of the people.  And I think golf should be a game that the people want to aspire to through success.  It was always meant to be, and people get there through success.” (Credit Golf Digest)"

So he wants to take a game that is struggling in revenue and popularity all over the country and turn people away from it.  How does that make the game better?  The answer is very simple, it doesn’t.  This game exploded in the late 90s and early 2000s because of Tiger Woods.  He grew honing his skills on a naval golf course in Southern California.  If Trump had it his way, Tiger may never have stepped on a golf course and the game would never be where it is today.

To say that golf is something we all shouldn’t be able to play is ridiculous and just proves that Trump will never be in touch with the rest of society.  Just think about all the great programs like the First Tee  that are spreading golf all over the country.  They are teaching golf and teaching life to kids who need that direction.  He may think he’s better than the rest of us and we all know he’s not afraid to tell us that, but he’s not good for golf.  His courses are great but they aren’t needed and neither is he, so Mr. Trump “you’re fired.”
