J.B. Holmes Still In Front After 36 Holes At Doral

After setting Doral a blaze on Thursday, J.B. Holmes plotted his way around it on Friday, but managed to not lose his spot on top of the leaderboard.  The first round leader wasn’t as sharp in round two and his one over par 73 wasn’t impressive, but it was good enough for the bomber to hang on for the thirty-sixe hole lead.  He struggled immediately with a double bogey right out of the gate then gathered some late momentum with birdies on 16 and 17, only top give them right back with a double bogey on the final hole.

The long hitting Holmes is the hottest thing from Kentucky other than their undefeated college basketball team.  He won at Quail Hollow last year and if it wasn’t for a questionable decision on the 72nd hole he may have won at Torrey Pines this year.   He has the length to bring the best courses to their knees and Doral is no exception.  As Donald Trump’s South Florida monster showed her teeth on Friday, Holmes was happy to walk off the course with the lead.

"“If you had told me that at the beginning of week I would have a two‑shot lead after two rounds, I would have said, all right, sounds good. I played great today. Just had a few loose swings, and today, happened to not go in the right spot.” (PGATour.com)"

Ryan Moore and Adam Scott are in hot pursuit of the leader.  Lost in the midst of Holmes’ 62, Moore wasn’t too shabby himself with a 66 in round one and then followed it up with another under par round on Friday.  Scott who is playing in his first tournament of the year said goodbye to the anchored putter but has moved passed the mourning period.  His 68 on Friday was the best score from anyone in the top five. The former number one player in the world is certainly someone to look out for over the weekend.

Bubba Watson and Henrik Stenson will be teeing off on Saturday five shots behind the leader after two under par rounds from each of them.  Watson’s round today was interesting to say the least.  He carded a three under par 69 without registering a birdie. Stenson was less theatric but the number three-ranked player in the world is in great position to make a run at things on South Beach.

Then there’s Rory McIlroy.  The game’s best player shockingly missed the cut last week and continued to struggle on Thursday.  On Friday despite losing his cool on the 8th hole and launching his 3-iron into a pond his round today wasn’t too shabby.  A two under par 70 gives him a chance for the weekend, and if you’re Rory McIlroy all you need is a chance.

Two names to keep an eye out for are Dustin Johnson & Sergio Garcia.  Both players are two weeks removed from coming up short at Riviera and are established winners looking to breakthrough for bigger things in 2015.  Neither one has looked overly sharp, but they both can make moves up the leaderboard tomorrow.  Like Holmes, Johnson has the ability to over power any golf course he steps on.  He and the rest of the field will be in hot pursuit on Saturday as the world’s best continue to try and sleigh the “Blue Monster.”
