No Guinness For Rory McIlroy

As most of us prepare to ring in St. Paddy’s Day with a pint of Guinness, don’t expect the world’s best golfer to be joining us.  Surprisingly Rory McIlroy, Northern Ireland’s native son isn’t a fan of the stuff.  Yes he’s not exactly “Irish” but come on Northern Ireland and Ireland are close enough here!  The Irish can take credit for Rory being the best golfer in all of the land, but when it comes to sharing a pint with him at their local pub, he’ll be asking for a drink menu.  In a 2011 interview on the Dan Patrick Show Rory revealed the shocking revelation.

"Patrick: Has Guinness contacted you to sponsor you?McIlroy: No definitely not.  I don’t really like the stuff to be honest, I don’t think I’d be a good spokesperson for the company.Patrick: Wait a minute I thought that is like mother’s milk in Ireland?McIlroy: No, well not mine anyway.Patrick: What’s your go to beer then?McIlroy: Heineken is my go to beer."

Now I can’t blame McIlroy because I’m not a Guinness fan either, but you won’t catch me drinking a Heineken.  Maybe I should though cause whatever McIlroy is drinking it is certainly working for his golf game.  Sure he’s been less than stellar in his last two starts, but he’s still the overwhelming favorite at Augusta and undoubtedly the best player on the planet and the galaxy.  Now he even has a video game to add to his accolades.

With the Masters just three weeks away the focus is starting to be turned on the players who will challenge McIlroy.  Names like Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth have all been mentioned, but if they will be able to pull off remains to be seen.  All eyes will be set on McIlroy and not because of his choice of adult beverage but because what he does on the golf course.

He may not be drinking Guinness but I can guarantee you that there will be some St. Patty’s day celebrations where ever McIlroy is staying this week in preparations for the Arnold Palmer Invitational.  This will most likely be his final tune up before he takes that drive down Magnolia Lane.  So maybe it’s good that Rory is staying away from the dark beers.  I can guarantee you that you don’t want to be dealing with that headache in the morning.
