From a fantasy perspective, this week is very interesting. It’s almost like – for me anyway – that I’m making picks not only for this week, but for next week at the PGA Championship, as well.
The golfers that I’m really high on and have had penciled in for the PGA Championship are golfers I like here at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
For example, I’m big on Hideki Matsuyama, as usual. He’ll be on all my teams this week and I’m planning on having Matsuyama on a number of my teams at the PGA Championship.
Let’s say Matsuyama wins this week. That would be great because my teams would have the potential to make big money. But, on the other hand, it will effect his salary in a way that he maybe more expensive than what I was initially expecting for next week.
However, if he does poorly, maybe he’ll be a bit cheaper and folks may avoid him at the PGA Championship. I wouldn’t mind that.
It would burn my teams for this week, but Matsuyama playing poorly this week maybe beneficial for next week. It’s an interesting balancing act this week.

Anyway, let’s get into the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational fantasy sleeper picks. With this being a limited field the salary is condensed with the cheapest pick coming at only $7,000.
So, it doesn’t give us much to work with, but we’ll be targeting the golfers in that $7,000 to $7,500 range.
We’ve got four golfers to talk about all with different backgrounds in terms of their current form, how their respective game fits at Firestone, and how they fit in next week at Whistling Straits. It should make for an interesting discussion, so let’s get to it.
Bernd Wiesberger– As we talked about with Matsuyama, Bernd Wiesberger is someone who I have had penciled in as one of my core plays at the PGA Championship.
Wiesberger is fantastic off the tee. He hits it high, he hits it long, and he hits it straight. Wiesberger is a major value play for next week and I’m hoping he stays that way, but it probably won’t.
Wiesberger’s game fits Firestone like a glove. The only downside (or perhaps upside depending on how you look at it) is the fact that Wiesberger hasn’t teed it up here at Firestone. It may take him awhile to figure out the course.
Nevertheless, Wiesberger’s game fits, he’s a value pick, and I look at it as a win-win situation. If he plays well, great, the potential for big money is in the cards this week. If he doesn’t, great, that just means he will stay as a value pick for next week.
J.B. Holmes– J.B. Holmes is another core golfer who I’m targeting at the PGA Championship. Holmes’ game fits at Whistling Straits, but he is wildly inaccurate and that could hurt him this week.
If it does, that’s okay. That just means the public and salary will overreact and he’ll be a value play nobody is on next week. However, he could potentially overpower Firestone and play well. If he does I want to have my shares on him.
Basically, the theme this week is I don’t want to be stuck at the bus stop holding an empty bag.
Victor Dubuisson– It looked like Victor Dubuisson was coming out of his funk as he made the cut in three straight tournaments heading into The Open Championship.
Dubuisson looked like a great value pick, but he struggled and missed the cut by one stroke. Dubuisson is back trending in the wrong direction as he has missed the cut in his last two events.
At a WGC event with no cut, however, Dubuisson makes for a great value play. Dubuisson could have his usual blowup round either on Thursday or Friday, but get to play on the weekend and backdoor his way into a top ten finish when it’s all said and done.
Dubuisson is very much a boom-or-bust player and with no cut the bust this week is diminished a little bit.
Kevin Na– Kevin Na has been out of the spotlight for a bit now and now maybe a pretty good opportunity to buy low. Na is a rock solid ball-striker and maybe able to work his way around Firestone.
For next week, on paper, Na doesn’t look like a great pick at Whistling Straits. I feel that Na is probably too short to compete, but you never know.
However, if you can get him this week and he plays well; then fade him next week when everyone’s on him that would be the perfect, ideal play right there.
