While the golf world’s elite are descending upon Firestone Country Club for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational this week (you can check out Danny Norris‘ power rankings for that event right here), the masses of the PGA Tour are headed out west for the Barracuda Championship. Held annually at Montreux Golf and Country Club in Nevada, it’s currently the only PGA Tour event to use the Modified Stableford scoring system, adding a fascinating layer to the alternate event.

While the world’s top 50 players will be absent from the Barracuda, it’s still a legitimate PGA Tour event, one that awards a two-year exemption and 300 FedEx Cup points. Consequently, it’s an important week for many players, especially those that are in danger of being forced out of the FedEx Cup playoffs bubble. Only the top 125 get in, and a few points here and there can make or break an entire season.

While the field at the Bridgestone features many players near the top of the FedEx Cup points list, the highest ranked competitor at the Barracuda, Brendan Steele, is 56th. That’s a sign that this tournament, in the absence of true dominators, is much more wide open than other PGA Tour events.

In Stableford, rather than being scored relative to par, players accumulate points over the course of the four days. Essentially, it makes less severe the effects of bogeys and double bogeys, so look for the players that tend to rack up a lot of par breakers to do particularly well. Still, just like every other week, getting the ball in the hole is the name of the game.

Without further ado, let’s go ten deep and examine some of the best bets for success at the Barracuda Championship.
