$6,900-$6,000

There are a couple of golfers I like in this range, but the one I love is Bernd Wiesberger ($6,700). I will have a lot of shares on Wiesberger as his game is made for Whistling Straits.

Wiesberger is really strong off the tee he hits it 300 yards, he hits it high, and he hits it pretty straight. What have we been saying for this entire article? Whistling Straits is a links-like course and length matters.

I’m banking on it fitting Wiesberger’s eye real nicely. I could envision a sneaky top ten finish from Wiesberger.

Also, Wiesberger should be a bit of a contrarian pick. Surprisingly enough, not many were really on Wiesberger at The Open. Only 8% picked him and that was with him coming off a win at the French Open.

Plus, he was one of those “guys” coming in that the experts pegged as a sleeper. Yet, he still only came in at 8% ownership. I don’t think he will nearly have the same buzz coming in and based on that he should be lower owned than what he was at The Open.

Tommy Fleetwood ($6,700) is another golfer I’ll be targeting. Now, Fleetwood was the sexy pick for The Open and he burned a lot of folks. Fleetwood was one of the more popular plays coming in at around 16%.

I have to believe that a lot of people will be weary of him after his performance at The Open. However, I do think, he’s not a bad play. Fleetwood has a game similar to Wiesberger’s. Fleetwood is solid off the tee, he hits it 300 yards and hits about 63% of his fairways.

Fleetwood isn’t in the best of form, but this is golf and we see it week in and week out that anything can happen. Especially when a course fits a golfers’ game and Whistling Straits fits Fleetwood’s game. It’s all a matter of executing.

Russell Henley ($6,800) is another interesting pick. He is coming off a 5th place finish at the Greenbrier and a T-20 at The Open. Henley is a great putter statistically, and he is rock solid off the tee.

Henley’s playing well and at a wide open course like Whistling Straits that does seem to fit Henley’s eye. Henley is another one of these low priced that you can put on your team to five yourself some room to fit a Spieth, Johnson, and Day.

These are the three I really like in this group. Graham DeLaet ($6,900) always has the potential, but he just never anything at these big events.

Kevin Chappell ($6,800) has been hot and remember he did lead after round one last year at Valhalla. If Tony Finau ($6,800) had a little more seasoning, I would take him, but I’m always leery of taking rookies at majors.

  • Finau is a bomber and he was fantastic at the U.S. Open finishing T-12. I’m not taking him, but don’t let me stop you. Finau has the game to perform and he proved himself at Chambers Bay.

Once we get down below $6,600 I start losing interest. There’s a few that are interesting, but that’s about it. I can make a number of different teams I’m really confident without going to the bottom of the barrel.

As for my pick in this group, I’ll take Wiesberger. I feel good about his chances. I could see Wiesberger being that sleeper pick that the mainstream don’t see coming, but when you look at Wiesberger he has the makeup to do some big things at the PGA Championship.
