2015 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational: Jim Furyk In Control Heading Into Saturday

Jim Furyk in control heading into the weekend

After shooting another 4-under 66 on Friday, Jim Furyk is in control and has a four shot lead heading into the weekend. Furyk’s statistics really aren’t off the charts, but he’s just continually scoring.

Furyk is hitting less than 40% of fairways, and is just a little above average in terms of Greens in Regulation and Strokes Gained: Putting.

Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, and Shane Lowry both shot up the leaderboard today as they sit in a tie for 2nd at 4-under par. What all three have in common is the fact that they are using their length to their advantage.

The difference is Johnson’s putter has been hot for both days. Johnson’s Strokes Gained: Putting is 1.620. That’s very encouraging to see, we’ll see if he keeps that up as we head into the weekend.

Danny Lee struggled throughout the day, but he did salvage his round by birding the final two holes to finish up at 3-under par after two days. Lee is in a tie for 5th along with Graeme McDowell and Henrik Stenson.

Like yesterday, a number of golfers sit at 2-under par. One of those golfers include Jordan Spieth as he had a quality to move up 14 spots today.

We talked about Justin Rose’s putter yesterday and said that if he could sink a couple of putts he’d be right there. Well, Rose continued to struggle with the putter.

In fact, he was worse today, as his Strokes Gained: Putting is -1.425, but he still managed to just shoot 1-over par today and sit at 2-under for the tournament.

Sergio Garcia and Patrick Reed both shot 3-under 67’s today to get up to 2-under for the tournament. Reed’s putter was still strong, but the difference was his ball-striking was much better. The same could be said for Garcia as his Strokes Gained: Putting is 1.859 after two rounds.

Keegan Bradley’s ball-striking was superb again today, but his putter is letting him down. Bradley is driving the ball 330 yards hitting 71% of fairways, and 61% of greens, but his Strokes Gained: Putting is -0.418. Bradley is still hanging around at 1-under par in a tie for 17th.

Matt Kuchar’s putter is still letting him down, but he somehow found a way to finish the round at 2-under to get to even for the tournament.

Four golfers that were around the top of the leaderboard yesterday, but really struggled today were Hideki Matsuyama, Koumei Oda, Francesco Molinari, and Thomas Bjorn.

Matsuyama and Molinari both shot five-over par for the round and are four and five over par for the tournament, respectively. Molinari shot a 4-over par for the round and is 3-over par for the tournament. Oda was the biggest downer of the day as he fell 50 spots, shot a 7-over par and is 5-over the tournament.
