The U.S. Open

Winner: Justin Rose

Oakmont will host the U.S. Open Championship once again for the ninth time. I couldn’t be happy about that as this will be a fun, old school U.S. Open where the winner will, more than likely, be over par.

The winner here will be someone that can just grind it out time and time again. They don’t get to high or too low and they can put a bad shot behind them and stay mentally strong.

There are a number of golfers like that. I think a lot of folks might be on Rickie Fowler in this spot, and I can see that. Fowler is getting closer to winning a major championship in his career and he has the mental makeup to win a U.S. Open in his career.

If Fowler is going to win a major, it’ll probably come at a U.S. Open, especially when it is hosted on a track like Oakmont. You would get no arguments from me if you went Fowler here in this spot.

  • You also have to strongly consider Jordan Spieth and Jason Day. Both of them have shown that their best attribute is the mental toughness the demonstrate. That’s a huge reason why Spieth won the U.S. Open this year and why Day has finished inside the top nine in three of the last four U.S. Open’s.

I even wouldn’t count out golfers like Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker. They might not be the sexy picks, but Furyk is the poster child of just grinding out pars, not getting too high and not getting too low.

All in all, though, I’m going with Justin Rose in this spot. Rose steps his game up when the going gets tough. That’s why Rose already has one U.S. Open Trophy in his collection and I think he has a great chance at adding another one in 2016.

Plus, Rose is too good to be just a one hit wonder. Rose needs a few more major championships in his career and I’m hoping he at least gets one in 2016. This, The Masters, and the PGA Championship are all majors that set up well for him.
