Emiliano Grillo Leads Web.com Tour Championship at TPC Sawgrass
By Ryan Young
Six years ago, Lucas Glover found himself on 18th green at Bethpage Black, hoisting the U.S. Open trophy after outlasting the likes of Phil Mickelson and David Duval. Today, Glover finds himself one shot off the lead at the Web.com Tour Championship, fighting for a coveted PGA Tour card for the next season.

Glover has put himself in a great position to earn back his playing privileges on the PGA Tour next season but will have to chase down Emiliano Grillo if he wants to win. Grillo fired a 6-under 64 on Friday to take a one-shot lead over the former U.S. Open champion and lead the way at 10-under. Grillo followed up his first round 66 on Thursday with six birdies and one eagle in the second round on Friday. The eagle came from the result of a 175-yard hole out from the 18th fairway.
Glover lost his status on the PGA Tour after finishing the year 147th in the FedEx Cup standings. This meant he’d have to play his way back through the Web.com Tour Finals series. Glover came into the Web.com Tour Championship in 15th place on the Finals series money list, with $38,991 earned. It’s likely that amount might have been enough to earn back his card, but Glover seems focused on finishing the week strong:
"I set out these four weeks with a job and that is still the mentality. I just want to play as good as I could and I’ll check it on Sunday night. – Lucas Glover"
The Web.com Tour Championship is the culmination of a four-week stretch of golf that ends with 25 players earning their PGA Tour card. The top 75 from the Web.com Tour regular series money list and the 126th to 200th ranked players on the FedEx Cup standings have been battling it out over the last four weeks for the chance to play alongside the big boys on the PGA Tour.
Twenty-five players have already earned their cards for next season thanks to finishing in the top 25 on the Web.com Tour regular season money list. The final 25 PGA Tour cards will come from the top 25 on the Finals money list.
Emiliano Grillo came into the week fifth on the Finals money list and had already made enough money in the Finals to earn a PGA Tour card next year. A win this week at the Web.com Tour Championship will give Grillo high playing priority next season on the PGA Tour. He’s been there before, coming close to picking up a win at the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open earlier this year.
Chez Reavie is tied for second with D.H. Lee after posting a 5-under 65 in his second round on Friday. Reavie has already picked up a victory in the Web.com Tour Finals series, winning the Small Business Connection Championship two weeks ago in North Carolina. D.H. Lee has also already secured his PGA Tour card for next year by finishing in the top 25 of the Web.com Tour regular season money list.
Live third and Final round coverage of the Web.com Tour Championship can be seen on Golf Channel this weekend at 3:00 PM EST.
