5 Ways for Golfers to Beat the Winter Blues

Winter is coming. It’s that time of year again for golfers to enter hibernation season. The golf season is coming to a close and golfers and trying to squeeze as much daylight and nice weather out of these final fall days before mother nature hits us with some harsh reality.

But fear not fellow golfers! There are ways you can get around the winter blues and beat the weather. Instead of moping around in a three month slumber, you should be taking advantage of the different opportunities to get your golf fix.

Here are five different ways for golfers to avoid the winter depression and make the most of the slow part of the golf season.

Plan a Golf Trip

Unless you are the lucky ones living in Florida or Arizona, warm weather will be difficult to come by December through February. As the old saying goes, “If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em!” and that’s exactly what you should do. Go visit one of those warm areas.

No one should have to go without playing golf for such an extended period of time, so get out of the winter funk with a trip with friends to an area where golf is played year round. Too many people forget you use their PTO days at work; use this an excuse to use them and take a trip.

Play Golf Indoors

If you don’t have the funds to pack up and jetset across the country, then you can still get your golf fix in wherever you may be.

Most driving ranges these days can’t afford to miss out on the winter rush, so they set up heaters or covers for their driving bays to keep their customers warm. Take advantage of your resources to keep your game sharp while your competitors are getting rusty.

Some ares in the country also have Top Golf, which is another incredible innovation in today’s golfing world. Grab some friends and go hit up one of these interactive driving ranges. Think of a bowling alley for golf, complete with a stocked bar.

If none of these options are available to you, then you can still play golf in the comforts of your home. Get some putting repetitions in to keep the flat stick hot by setting up your own putting green. It can be as simple as using a cup or building your own indoor dance floor.

PGA TOUR Wrap-Around Season

Some of the golfers may not like the year round PGA TOUR schedule, but as a golf fan it’s hard to complain. We’re already four tournaments deep into the 2015-16 season and it’s already been an exciting one.

Get a head start on all the action by keeping up with the golfers, instead of waiting for the Masters in April. There has been a first-time winner each week so far with Emiliano Grillo, Smylie Kaufman, Justin Thomas, and Russell Knox.

All of these names will be around for quite some time, so it’s a good idea to pay attention to these rising stars before the average joe knows about them. Who knows, it could benefit your fantasy golf teams.

Fantasy Golf

Speaking of fantasy golf, that’s another great way to cure your winter blues. There are plenty of fantasy golf leagues going on. From weekly leagues using sites like FanDuel or DraftKings to season-long leagues through Yahoo!, Golf Channel and PGA TOUR.com.

Use your golf knowledge to take on fellow golfers and win yourself some cash in the process.

If you are frequent fantasy golf player, the winter stretch is a wonderful opportunity to see which golfers are having a good start to the season. You can use these guys as your sleeper picks to help win your leagues.

Treat Yourself

Just because you’re not putting your golf clubs to use, doesn’t mean you should neglect them all winter. Instead, use it as a chance to show them love.

Grab a wet rag and a bucket of soap water and scrub those puppies down after the long season you put them through. Get the mud out of the grooves and grass stains off the clubface. It’s also a good time to take them to a golf store and get them regripped for the upcoming season.
