Jordan Spieth has more on his plate than Rory McIlroy and Abu Dhabi, but it’s first things first for the young Texan.

With Kapalua in his rear view mirror, Jordan Spieth isn’t wasting any time ensuring that his game is in top form for this week’s contest at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. But Abu Dhabi is just the first step in a whirlwind month ahead for the world’s top golfer.

Spieth is a guy who’s pushing the envelope. After his Abu Dhabi debut he’s going on to the Asian Tour’s Singapore Open and then back to the United States for the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Ah, to be young again. That’s three tournaments on three continents in four weeks.

Spieth’s presence on the tee box at the Sentosa Golf Club Serapong Course will no doubt do much to elevate the visibility of the Singapore Open, which is making a return to the pro calendar after a 3-year absence. But that’s next week. The Texan needs to stay focused on the upcoming Battle in the Desert.

He started his Abu Dhabi warm-up Tuesday with fellow Texan and probable future challenger Bryson DeChambeau and Brandon Stone, who may or may not be considered a Texan, depending on whether or not you get to be a Texan by playing golf for the University of Texas even though you’re a South African.

Still, it’s always good to play your practice round with a couple of other home boys who can help you get the kinks out and get ready to face off against Rory McIlroy and Ricky Fowler, Spieth’s 1st and 2nd round Abu Dhabi playing partners.

  • That’s going to be a tournament within a tournament that could easily eclipse Gary Stal’s title defense, Martin Kaymer’s attempt to reclaim some of his fading glory, and a charge that’s certain to come from the buoyant Europeans who romped to victory last week at the EurAsia Cup. That would be Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick.

McIlroy, who’s making his 2016 European Tour debut, has never hoisted the Falcon Trophy. Make no mistake. He wants it this year, for many reasons. And Fowler is coming in knowing that he needs to pile up the victories if he’s going to penetrate the upper tier in the OWGR.

From the charging young amateur to the a head-to-head battle between the sport’s glittering superstars, Abu Dhabi has all the ingredients of great golf drama.
