Defending champion Jason Day returns to Torrey Pines this week. Can he win the Farmers Insurance Open in back-to-back years?

After flip-flopping with the Waste Management Phoenix Open last year, the Farmers Insurance Open is back in its traditional slot on the schedule. With that comes the PGA Tour’s annual trip to La Jolla, California’s Torrey Pines Golf Course, one of the USA’s greatest and best-loved municipal venues.

Of course, when most people think of Torrey Pines, they think of one man: Tiger Woods. The 14-time major champion has been a fixture at the Farmers Insurance Open over the years, winning it seven times. His dramatic one-legged win at the 2008 U.S. Open also came at Torrey, so the man has a long and profound history with the venue. Unfortunately, the now 40-year-old Woods is at home recovering from back surgery, so fans won’t get to be thrilled by his shotmaking this week.

Not that it matters much. Thanks to injuries and poor play, Woods has slipped all the way down to No. 422 in the world rankings, right between Scott Jamieson and Janne Kaske. Meanwhile, five members of the top 10 are headed to Torrey: Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed. Even with golf’s most famous face out of commission, this week’s field has plenty of star power.

Thanks to the strength of the field, this week’s installment includes a slew of familiar faces, all of whom are trending well for one reason or another. Without further ado, let’s get to it. Here are this week’s best bets for success at the Farmers Insurance Open.
