Jordan Spieth 3 Back at Singapore Open as Darkness Falls in Round 3

Jordan Spieth, struggling to maintain pace at the Singapore Open, is reaching for the lead.

It was a long day for Jordan Spieth. The World #1 played 27 holes of golf. Spieth had to wake up early to finish his last 11 holes from his second round, which was suspended due to thunderstorms.

Spieth seemed to come out rejuvenated in the early morning. He quickly was able to tally birdies at the 10th and 11th, inching further up the leaderboard. Unfortunately the Man from Dallas would finish with a terrible bogey on the very gettable par-5 18th hole. That left him at 5-under-par, and 4 shots back of the lead after the conclusion of round two.

Putting has been a struggle all week for Jordan Spieth, arguably the best putter in the world. The world no. 1 has missed quite a few putts inside of 10 ft, which sends a shock to your system every time you see him unable to hole a short one. The greens at the Serapong course have a significant amount of grain. It just makes keeping the ball on line a bit trickier.

Jordan teed off his third round at 2:50 local time. It was going to be dicey as to whether or not he would be able to finish. Due to the swirling winds in Singapore, it make picking the right club more difficult. Consequently that leads to everyone taking just that extra bit longer.

Spieth would get through 16 holes at 1-under-par for the round, and at 6-under-par for the tournament. This would leave him 3 shots back of Korean Young Song, as the horn blew for darkness.

The story of Spieth’s third round was his inconsistencies off the tee. He wasn’t able to find a fairway until the 9th hole. Remarkably he was actually under par, thanks to birdieing the two par-5’s on the front side. However, his drive at the 5th cost him as he drove it into the sand and caught the lip of the bunker on his second shot, which resulted in him making a bogey.

  • Distance control was another issue Spieth has had this week. He has come up short far too many times with scoreable clubs in his hands. Having a substitute caddie may be part of it, as Spieth’s agent Jay Danzi is on the bag instead of Michael Greller who is dealing with an ankle injury. To their credit, Spieth’s distance control seemed to be better in round 3 versus the opening two rounds.

Despite all of that, Spieth is still very much in this tournament. It’s why he is the best in the game. He is able to contend when it looks like he is struggling. He knows how to put a score on the card.

If Spieth were to birdie the easy par-5 finishing hole, it will leave him with an opportunity to play in the final group.

If that is the case, it would give Spieth a huge advantage. It puts a lot of pressure on players who are not used to huge galleries. You also have to remember that these players have all watched Spieth win majors on TV. To some degree, Jordan Spieth has an intimidation factor about him that can sometimes get the best of the players he is grouped with. Remind you of anybody?

The third round will resume at 7:30 a.m. local time, or 6:30 p.m. eastern time today. Hopefully the storms will be able to stay away, so the players can finish the final round on time.
