Jordan Spieth Comes Up 1 Shot Short at Singapore Open
By Ryan Andrade
Jordan Spieth stayed in contention in Singapore, even as he struggled with his flat stick.
After multiple weather suspensions that forced a Monday finish in Singapore, world #1 Jordan Spieth came up one shot short of forcing a playoff between eventual champion Song Young Han of South Korea.
It was a frustrating week for Jordan Spieth. He struggled with distance control, driving accuracy and, most importantly, his putting. Yet despite all of his struggles, he came into the final round 5 shots back. There was no way you could count out Spieth.
He was off and rolling early with two birdies in his first four holes. He then went to his nemesis hole, the 5th. He was unable to sink a 6 footer for par and dropped back to 7-under-par. That made Spieth a dismal 3-over-par at the tough 5th hole for the week.

He would bounce back with birdies at the 8th and 11th holes to get to 9-under-par. Knowing he needed a good finish to have a shot, Spieth came to the par-4 15th. Fearing going left into the water, Spieth blocked his tee shot way right. From there he had to play a low shot, to keep he ball below some over hanging branches. Even with a huge clump of mud on the ball, Jordan was able to judge it just right and left himself an 8 footer for birdie. When he struck the putt there was never a doubt.
After a clutch par save at the 17th hole, Spieth came to the par-5 finishing hole. As he stood over the ball on the tee, the wind inexplicably switched directions. It went from straight downwind, to straight into the Texan’s face. Spieth was forced to play it as a three shot hole. His approach from 85 yards kicked forward to 5 feet.

Then all of the sudden…an airhorn sounded. That meant only one thing, lightning in the area. Everyone had to evacuate. This meant Spieth had to sleep on a 5 footer that he had to make to have any chance.
Play would resume bright and early at 7:30 local time. Spieth was his usual cool and calm under pressure, as he knocked in the putt to get to 11-under-par and a final round score of 66.
It just wasn’t quite enough for Jordan Spieth however to collect yet another win. 54 hole leader Song Young Han didn’t flinch at all coming down the stretch, as he was able to hold on to 12-under-par for the win.
It was quite remarkable how the young 24 year-old Korean handled himself. He hit quite a few loose shots off the tees, but his putter was true all round. Plainly and simply, he made the putts inside of 10 feet that Spieth was missing all week.
This week would be hard to define as a disappointment for Jordan Spieth. The solo 2nd makes it 14 out of his last 32 tournaments that Spieth has finished either 1st or 2nd. The biggest reason he is the best player in the world is even when he plays average he is still able to get himself in contention for the win. It really is Tiger-esk.
Jordan Spieth will be looking forward to some much needed and well deserved rest this week, as he finishes his global golf tour and heads back to the continental U.S. His worst finish over his six event global tour was a T-7. Spieth is a synonym for consistency.
World #1 will tee it up next in two weeks at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where he expects to have his usual caddie Michael Greller back on his bag. Greller did not travel to Singapore with Spieth after injuring his ankle in Abu Dhabi the week prior but he’s making it clear that he’ll be back on the bag when it counts.
