Jordan Spieth and Jake Owen Entertain Press Room

Jordan Spieth joked with the press and then he got serious.

Jordan Spieth might have the most entertaining press conference of anyone playing in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The number 1 player in the world is just a really funny guy. This week Spieth was sharing the stage with his Pro-Am partner, country music star Jake Owen. The good friends fed well off each other and gave us some interesting stories.

The Jordan Spieth bobblehead has been a pretty big topic of conversation heading into the week. AT&T will be giving out 8,000 Jordan Spieth bobbleheads. Spieth, of course, is an ambassador for AT&T and thus they wanted to do something to promote him at their event.

This is what Spieth thought about his bobblehead, with a Jake Owen bobblehead sighting as well.

This is the important question – right? I think I’d have to say Jake Owen’s bobbled better, purely because of that hair.

Once the two were able to get past their bobbleheads, a reporter brought up their game yesterday at nearby Cypress Point. Let’s just say World #1 did not finish #1 in this golfing match. Jake Owen was given 9 shots and the normally clutch Spieth wasn’t able to drain a 12 foot putt at the last. As Spieth put it, “I missed it and Jake celebrated.”

Owen was clever in asking for shots. He would simply say, “You’re the best player in the world!”

A more serious topic after Spieth’s “World Tour” was how he was feeling physically. Going into Singapore Spieth has complained of mental and physical fatigue that began in Abu Dhabi.

Spieth assured everyone that he is now fresh and ready to go.

  • Spieth also fired some serious shots at his manager Jay Danzi, who had filled in for Spieth’s normal caddie, Michael Greller, in his last event in Singapore. Spieth was talking about his 2nd place finish in Singapore, where he came up one shot short of victory. Then he uttered out of nowhere, “. . . maybe have a caddie that can help close the deal.”

It was all in good humor of course, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Danzi looks for a bit of revenge down the line.

Another interesting topic was Spieth’s December visit to Augusta National. He referenced how cool in was to go back and see his name on the giant Masters trophy that sits in the clubhouse. Even better though was seeing that he shared a locker with Arnold Palmer in the champions locker room. It doesn’t get much better than that.

By far the most interesting story was the one Spieth brought up, in which he said, “tell them about the plaque.” Jake Owen had a charity event and the always-competitive Spieth never missed an opportunity to earn some bragging rights.

It’s a hell of a story. The best part is Spieth saying “pay up” while it was in the air. I just wonder when that plaque will be put up?

Speaking of hole outs, Spieth and his caddie Michael Greller have a little competition every year on how many hole outs the World #1 will have. The loser has to pick up the dinner tab at season’s end. Greller had an expensive check to pick up last year, as Spieth brought quite a crowd to the pay-off celebration. This year the number has been posted at 20 hole outs. There are special twists, such as every hole out in a major counts as double. I’d say there is a good chance Greller has another expensive tab coming his way at the end of 2016.

There are really two tournaments going on this week. One involves individual stroke play among the professionals, but the other is the team event with Pro-Am partners. Top-seeded Spieth made his opinions on it quite clear, telling playing partner Jake Owen, “I’d rather take a win and us get second, than we win and me get second.”

I’d say if Spieth is able to pull it out, there’s a good chance that they will win the team event as well. Jake Owen will be able to hold his own.

Jason Day certainly thought so as he walked in on Spieth’s press conference as he was waiting for his to get started. Day grabbed a mic and said to Spieth, “I just wanted to know how your shoulders are going to feel, because their going to be pretty light because Jake’s going to be carrying you the whole week.”

    Well-played, Jason Day!

Maybe Jordan Spieth and Jason Day will run into each other again this week, but this time hopefully it’s on Sunday.
