Jordan Spieth makes a statement to cap off his incredible 2015 season.

The Grand Slam was not to be in 2015 for Jordan Spieth. He came up one shot short of a playoff in the Open Championship and preceded to go 17-under-par at the PGA Championship and lose by 3 to red hot Jason Day. Spieth was able to reach #1 in the Official World Golf Rankings with his solo 2nd at the PGA Championship. He became the second youngest #1 ranked player, as Tiger had not turned 22 when he accomplished the feat back in 1997.

Spieth’s status would be short lived after he missed back-to-back cuts in the first two events of the FedEx Cup playoffs. It was a shock to the entire golf landscape really. Making things more interesting was Jason Day, as he went off and took 2 of the first 3 titles to start the FedEx Cup playoffs. Combining those performances with Day’s first major championship a few weeks prior, elevated him to #1 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

That left a number of questions heading into the TOUR Championship about who would win Player of the Year. Spieth had seemingly blown away the field the first 7 months of the season. There couldn’t be a doubt as to who the best player in 2015 was, could there? It was definitely a hot button for debate amongst the media and players as well. Day had 5 total victories, including a major. Spieth had 4 total victories, but had two majors.

Ever since the U.S. Open, nobody has gotten a better seat to Jason Day’s brilliant display of golf than Jordan Spieth. They had been paired together 10 times in that span, with Jason Day holding the head-to-head scoring edge at 7-2-1 of Spieth. Having to watch Day’s play was the biggest factor for motivation in Spieth to go out and take this final event, and more importantly the FedEx Cup title.

Because of Spieth and Day’s positioning in the FedEx Cup standings, they would be paired again in the first round of the TOUR Championship. This time it would be Spieth who would shoot the lower round, as he fired a 68 to Day’s 69. Both would have a lot of ground to make up on Henrik Stenson who was at 7-under-par after his blazing 63.

Spieth would stay very sharp the next 36 holes, going 4-under-par on Friday and then 2-under-par on Saturday to grab the solo lead by 1 over Henrik Stenson heading into the final round. In that stretch Spieth would make only one bogey on the home course of the great Bobby Jones. If Spieth could hold onto the lead, he would take home not just the TOUR Championship, but the FedEx Cup title that comes with a $10 million bonus. Safe to say, plenty was at stake.

Spieth would start strong by making a birdie at the 2nd to get off and rolling. However, he would add bogeys at the 5th and 6th holes to drop back to over-par for the day. Spieth was able to right the ship by making birdies on the last two holes to get back into red figures on the day.

Unfortunately, Spieth would drop back again at the very difficult 10th hole. The very next hole, however, he would give us another final round highlight on the back nine.

That would give Spieth a 3 shot lead, and he wouldn’t look back. He played the last 7 holes beautifully, carding 7 straight pars. He forced playing partner Henrik Stenson to try and catch him, but that was going to be a lot to ask on a tough golf course like East Lake.

Spieth would end up carding a 1-under-par round of 69 to win the TOUR Championship by 4 shots. This was his final stroke on 18, as he claimed his first FedEx Cup.

With that, Spieth ended any conversation of an upset for Player of the Year. He showed he is the best player in the world, and truly had a season that nobody will soon forget.
