Rory McIlroy – Takes 3 Shot Lead at Doral

Rory McIlroy’s not playing his best, but it’s better than the rest.

Rory McIlroy came into the final round at the WGC-Cadillac Championship trailing Adam Scott by two strokes. He made up that gap and more, and he will be taking a three shot lead into Sunday.

McIlroy has been making very good use of his new left hand low putting grip. I think it will be safe to say he will be using this for some time. Earlier this year, McIlroy was just disastrously off with his putting. It magnified inside of ten feet. This week he looks incredibly comfortable on those putts the best players in the world should make.

When Rory is playing his best, he is the best ball striker in the world. Thus when he is on with the flat stick, he is almost unbeatable. It sure is looking that way this week. He is just 54 holes away from his first victory of the 2016 campaign, and would put him on a good path heading into Augusta.

A Quick Look at the WGC-Cadillac Championship Leaderboard

36 hole leader Adam Scott finally came back to Earth on Saturday. The Aussie shot a 1-over-par 73 and trails McIlroy by three. Scott was just a little wayward in all areas of his game. This course, as much as any on tour, will bite you if you make slight errors. When Scott did get into trouble he couldn’t really get out of it, as he struggled getting the ball up and down.

He hit many good putts, but he just couldn’t seem to buy one. His last few tournaments he has been dropping every putt he should. Adam Scott is still in a great position heading into Sunday, and he is still one of the best ball strikers in the world.

Joining Rory McIlroy in the final group is defending champion Dustin Johnson. The long hitter missed a short par putt on the last to shoot just 1-under-par 71. It certainly was a round that could have been much better. DJ isn’t really known for his putting ability, especially from short range. On Saturday he struggled to find consistency with his stroke, and thus wasn’t able to take advantage of the quality iron shots he hit.

I’m really interested to see how Dustin Johnson steps his game up on Sunday. This is one of his favorite courses on tour. He needs to match Rory McIlroy shot for shot, and find away to prove to himself that he is one of the best players in the world. If he can do that, it will play huge for him when we get around to major season, as he is still chasing down his first.

American’s Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson sit back at 7-under-par and 5 shots back of Rory McIlroy. The only way they can get back in this tournament is if Rory comes back to them. Right now it’s just hard to see that happening. However, this is the Blue Monster and anything can happen.
